I try to stay away from New Year’s Resolutions. I try so very, very hard, and yet I always find myself searching for that reset button. You know, the life-changing one. The one that says “I will be different this year! I will accomplish ALL THE THINGS!”
As I’ve aged, I’ve realized that I shouldn’t view the start of the new year as a reset, but more as a marker, and not so much one that marks where I’ve been, but rather, a signpost pointing toward I’m going with my life and dreams. One could also say I’m approaching this year’s start as a reminder to take a step outside of myself and ask which direction am I pivoting. Am I walking the paths I need to for the sake of my family and myself?
For what may be the first time in several years, I’ve realized the answer is yes, so far, I am. My life is far from perfect, my goals are far from being accomplished, but I’ve made my way slowly down the paths I need to walk. I don’t need to reset myself. I don’t need to down detoxes, I don’t need to panic when self-imposed deadlines are passed and books are left unwritten, I don’t need to beat myself for abandoning my website for (*coughs*) two years, and in general, I need to simply breath, be, and meander along. My results will not be quick in any regard. I won’t churn out one book a month this year. I have a snowball’s chance in hell of turning in to a six-figure-a-year author this year. One foot in front of the other, one word after another, one healthier choice after another, I’ve discovered, has had a greater impact on me than resetting ever did.
It’s allowed me to take pride in what I *have* accomplished, and it’s allowed me to look to the future, knowing I’m laying what I hope to be a solid foundation for all those dreams and goals.
So now we’re entering the end of January, I want you to take a step back. Pull your finger away from the reset button, and perhaps, just pivot a little. Alter your course not with one fell swoop, but with gradual change and adjustment. Let’s be kind to ourselves, and to our dreams.
May your 2020 be filled with love, abundance, peace, success, fun, and fewer typos.

My work, Fractured Glass – a dark sci-fi romance nod to Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass – will be in the Once Upon a Fairy Tale Night: A Collection of Retellings anthology alongside some cool authors! Pre-order link forthcoming.
That’s all for now!
Sending you love and blessings,
